Students across the country are experiencing an increase in mental health concerns. Those working in schools know that outside health concerns of a child impact their day to day academic learning. While the ideal situation may have been for children to head to a doctor or therapist outside of the school day, the reality is it can’t always happen. This is why many schools are leaning toward a school-based therapy approach. With guardian permission, kids are able to work with healthcare professionals to get needed therapy within the school day. Taking therapists out of their clinics and putting them into school makes it more affordable and convenient.

Students are exposed to a lot of different experiences early on in life. When you work with children during therapy sessions, you never know if you may perk their interest in a future career. It is extremely important to remember this when you are working each individual student. While you are focusing on their goals and skills, you also form a bond with them. If this becomes strong enough over time, a mentoring relationship may form with older students who are interested in physiology.

Gym class can be difficult for many students. It is often a less structured time which has a lot of stimuli going on. There are also many social interactions that take place between peers. This may be interacting with one another, or playing a sport within the gym class. This may be a challenge for any child, no less one with special needs. Adaptive physical education classes are helping to change the way students interact and make it a successful experience for those involved.

The biggest problem with this is that there is less money for many of the students who need it the most. Special education numbers across the country are going up. Now, a new factor may hurt children with special needs more than many understand.

Playgrounds are often thought of as a space for kids to play and get energy out. The reality for school therapists and teachers is they can provide an outdoor therapy space and classroom. In addition to this, playgrounds are areas that students feel safe in because they are associated with fun. This helps to lower student anxiety and resistance to talking, working on skills, and more. When weather permits, school counselors, therapists, and special education teachers are working in time on playgrounds to incorporate therapy sessions and lesson plans.
