Schools have a wide spectrum of students who are served under the Special Education umbrella. Many times, we assume that this only includes children who have academic needs because they are falling behind in the classroom. The reality is that kids qualify for 504 Plans and Individual Education Plans needs based on academic, social, and emotional needs. It is not simply due to academic concerns.

If you walk into any classroom, chances are you will see at least several students struggling with one thing. Why are they having difficulties? Many are unable to focus on their work and sit still in their seats. While many may rush to judge and say that they have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), it may be something else. There are newer therapies which can be used with students who struggle in this area.

Students who have attention troubles are nothing new in schools across the country. The fact that some children have difficulty in school has always been a part of the educational world. What's new is an increased number of students who have an official ADHD diagnosis. While some families may not share this information with teachers and their district, many choose to put 504 Plans into action and seek additional supports that may be needed in the classroom.

Imagine sitting in a classroom unable to concentrate on your work. You don’t want to bang your pencil on your desk, but you are doing it. Then you are told to stop it and get to work. Your reaction is to scream no and rip up your paper. You act out because you are upset, but the truth is that you don’t know what is going on. This is the reality for many children in schools throughout the United States. The National Institute of Mental Health recently noted that one in five kids in our country has or has had a debilitating mental health disorder. At any given time, a classroom will have children who are unaware that they have ADD, ADHD, anxiety, depression, or another mental health disorder.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a reality that many children, parents, and schools must face each and every day. Reports show that more than 1 in 10 children will be given this diagnosis by the time they are 17. Many families are faced with the difficult decision on whether or not to use medications, including stimulants, to help children with their attention.
